Snowmobiles are an inseparable part of life above the Arctic Circle. They guarantee a freedom of movement in challenging weather conditions and across long distances. In addition to everyday mobility, snowmobiles are essential for reindeer herding and tourism, two main sources of livelihood in northern Finland.

However, like other motorised vehicles, snowmobiles produce carbon emissions and noise pollution. Aurora PowerTrains, a company based in Rovaniemi, are currently developing and manufacturing zero-emission and zero-noise electric snowmobiles which could help in reducing the environmental damage brought by the growth of Arctic tourism. The technology is still under development, but the first eSleds have been manufactured and are already in use.
