Smart Kalasatama

Smart Kalasatama in Helsinki is part of a global movement of ‘Smart Cities’, which aims towards urban sustainability and well-being with the means of data and digital technologies. Kalasatama is a former harbour and industrial zone east of the Helsinki city centre, currently under development towards a residential and business area.

Since 2013, when the City of Helsinki started to develop Kalasatama as a ‘smart’ district, it has functioned as an urban lab for a variety of experiments. These include new solutions for waste management, sustainable energy production and various forms of citizen participation and community-building.
